Eng30 - using June of 2006, we are looking at question ONE of PART A of the Diploma Exam.  This is the more creative of the questions and involves three sources; a poem, a short story and a photo (or graphic).  These are completed within one class period.

Eng20 - Two visual rep. projects: Soundtracks to our Favorite Novels, Kraft Dinner box Redux.  Can you express your point of view or idea through a visual work?

LA9 - Handed back their first essays and went over comments.  Starting the Non-Fiction unit.

LA7 - WRITING QUIZ next monday.  I handed out a study sheet today so they can work off that to prepare. Also completed our UPSIDE DOWN poems.

Social7 - EXAM on monday covering the first three chapters.  We made the long answer questions up in class and student will have a copy of the possible options they came up with.

Oct 11&12, 2011

Eng30 - If you want to know what Satire and Irony are, talk to these grade 12s.  We're looking at Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.  Will finish on friday.

LA9 - Finishing Uniform Essay, then will continue Tabloid work.

LA7 - Looked at famous photographer and how he was innovative.  Going to to photo stories of our own.

Eng20 - completed Night essays homework these are due at the start of Friday's class or you'll be staying in during your Day6 SSL while your friends are enjoying the extra long lunch!!

Soc7 - Trying to lure potential businessmen to Italy...with posters.

 

Oct 5, 2011 - What a day!  First there were pictures and then a turkey trot!  Quite a lot of excitement!!

LA7 - Grammar day.  Looked at verbs and punctuation in sentences with multiple (list) items.

Eng20 - Finished Schindler's List and worked on Part III of NIGHT questions which are homework due tuesday.

LA9 - Talked about journalism and tabloids, then red a clever story about alien abduction.  Assignment will be completed tomorrow.

Soc7 - continued with chapter three.

Oct 3&4, 2011

Eng30 - Starting their first essay revisions - these are due at the end of thursday.  Remember to attach first marked draft to back of revised work.

Eng20 - Continued with Schindler's List and worked on essay from NIGHT novel.

LA9 - Continued work on first essay.

LA7 - After reading the short article on the spider/medical, we created our own health/wellness inventions.

Eng30 - went over first essay (on Rocking Horse Winner) individually with each student.  Remember to attach this first draft if you are doing a rewrite!

LA9 - AR reading day.  I <3 books!!

Soc7 - Chapter two quiz today.

LA7 - Got all introspecitive with a piece of peotry about the endless horizons of the soul.  Oh, it was groovy!

Eng20 - Looked that the Fine Art of the Opening Paragraph.

Eng20 - Continued with Schindler's List.  Will work on opening paragraphs of our essays tomorrow.

CTS 7/8 - Did a keyboarding timing today, and did self-portraits in PAINT.

Soc7 - Went over what is on quiz tomorrow.  Set up Current Events project - homework which is due monday.

LA7 - completed and handed in Personal Narratives.

LA9 - Started to look at the proper Essay Format (intro, thesis, body, etc.).

Eng30 - Handing in essays so we can go over (on friday) and do revisions.

Eng20 - Continued with questions from Night and watched a bit more of Schindler's List.

Eng30 -  Handed in essays...or at least you should have!!!!  Discussed key terms for the semester and did our firs visual assignment (black & white photograph - discussed contrast, depth, mood).

LA9 - AR reading day....the best day of the week!

Soc 7 - discussed getting mad rich in olden times.

LA7 - started our Personal Narratives - will finish in friday's class when in the Comp.Lab.

Eng20 - discussed questions from chapters 1 & 2 in Night.

Eng20 - Looked at the juxtaposition between chapter 1 and 2 in NIGHT.

CTS7/8 - Using PAINT we created original album covers - and they were very original to say the least.

Soc7 - Finished chapter 2 and did review questions - handed in at the end of class.

LA7 - Completed questions from Mountain Adventure

LA9 - completed graphic assignment.  If not done, hand in by thursday.

Sept. 19, 2011

Eng30 - after all the work we did on our rough copies, today you got to type them in and edit/revise.  homework they are due at the start of wednesday's class.

Eng20 - Started our first novel study, Night.  Took a look at the life of the author ElieWiesel and some background info on the Holocaust.  homework have chapter one and two read before tomorrow's class.

LA9 - Continued work on our Mad Hatter project.

Social7 - Looked at how the major cities were established (and why) in Italy

LA9 - looked at when to use capital letters (like at the start of this sentence....oops) and started reading short story.

LA7 - Looked at Singular and Plural Nouns.

Eng20 - What does it mean to infer info from a story?  Looked at A Handful of Dates to do this.

LA9 - Oh Lewis Caroll, you are a strange one.  Used the The Mad Hatter Tea Party from Alice in Wonderland to create a visual interpretation of the story - remembering to used Editing skills to decide what to keep in from story and what could be cut out so that if fits the limited space we have.

Social7 - Took a look at a short film on the development of key cities in Italy during the Renaissance.

LA7 - Our AR reading class.

Eng30 - worked on outlines and body paragraphs for our The Rocking Horse Winneressays.  homework you should at least have the basics for your rough copy of the essay when you get to class on monday - we're in the Computer Lab so you'll be typing in  your first draft and then can edit and revise.

Eng20 - Completed Satirical Fairy Taleshomework hand these in on monday at the START of class.

LA7 - Completed our Advice From A Grade 7er comic strips.

LA9 - Completed our continuation of the short story.

Soc7 - Started chapter two and discussed how geography affected world trade from Europe.

LA7 - Based on the short piece we looked at, came up with advice we like and are working on comic strips to illustrate the advice.

CTS7/8 - keyboarding and PowerPoint work.

Eng20 - Took a look at Ray Bradbury's creepy story The Fog Horn in regards to Foreshadowing and Mood.

LA9 - Maintain author's voice and stay true to characters as we continued the short story Doing Something.

Eng30 - Went over the opening paragrapsh and started looking for quotes to back up major points/arguements in body of essay for The Rocking Horse Winner.

LA9 - This was our AR class....mmmm....books....

Soc7 - Had quiz on definitions from chapter 1.

LA7 - Elements of the short storyand then did shared stories.  Rushed these so students could see how it is hard to build a good story on weak and undefined foundations (if the setting and characters are unclear, it's hard to get the story going).

Eng20 - Read A Bolt of White Cloth and looked at symbolism, character foils and theme - three BIG concepts.  Took in work to be marked.

Eng20 - Read The Wandering and used it as a springboard for discussions on such things as Figurative vs. Literally, and Audience & Purpose of writing.

CTS7/8 - worked on keyboarding, our bizarre animal hybrids and started to take a look at PowerPoint.

Soc7 - wrapped up chapter one.  homework questions 2 and 5 from the end fo the chapter.  quiz tomorrow on chapter one definitions.

LA7 - Discussed courage and Apartied and racism and all kinds of stuff. 

LA9 - Fiction assignment: book review (should have author bio, plot summare but NO spoilers, would you recommend and why) homework this is due tomorrow.

Sounds like everyone had a great time at the PowWow.

Eng30 - continued to look at Diploma questions as we prepare for the first essay of the year.  We took a look at The Sweet Art of the Opening Paragraph.  The opening for The Rocking Horse Winner is due on tuesdays class - homework.

Eng20 - Started our Satirical Fairy Tales - remember you need to something to mock or spoof.

LA9 - Took in Moving Day assignment and went over Peony questions.

LA7 - Took a look at a comic strip (a different way of telling a story) and discussed facial expressions and body language.

The heat wave continues!  I'm wearing shorts tomorrow...there, I said it!

LA7 - a double-shot day.  First block we worked on sentence structure and the types of nouns (proper, concrete, common, abstract and collective).  We are dedicating the 2nd LA7 block on day one to AR reading.....ahhhhh, books!  Due to the PowWow tomorrow, the assignment on courage is for homework and due monday at the start of class (question 1.C on page 15).

Eng20 - Read the story The Dead Child and discussed mood (and what contributes to it).  Also discussed the difference between opinion vs. informed opinion....thanks to Henry Rollins (formerly of Black Flag).

LA9 - Using The Jade Peony, we look at character definition.

Social7 - Going from feudal to the religious aspects of the renaissance.

Eng30 - Continued our diploma question examination with regards to The Rocking Horse Winner, but were cut short by mass.

Eng20 - Completed original endings and examined the EDITTING process.

Soc7 - More Black Plague fun and looked at the life of a serf.  Also, what are our (and by "our" I mean the grade 7 students) repsonsibilities at home, in school and in the community?

After a great loooong weekend, we were back at it again.

LA7 - Took a look at the story Some Days You're The Puppy and talked about internet safety and on-line identity.

CTS7/8 - Did our initial timings.  Remember, it's not how fast you type, you just want to show improvement over the semester with your keyboarding.  Finished our Get To Know MSWord practice and took a look at PAINT.

Eng20 - Looked at the story A Matter of Balanceand completed our rough copies of our own endings.  This was for homework - should have story finished before coming to class on tuesday.

LA9 - Using the short story Moonface, looked at symbolism.

Sept. 1, 2011

Eng20 - Looked at short story The Television Watching Artist.  Questions 1 and 3 involving static/changing character and theme.  Not for homework, we'll look at in next class.

CTS7/8 - First class so went over lab procedure, keyboarding skills, and file system.  Started looking at WSWord.

Soc7 - looked at critical thinking and started chapter one (Europe and the Renaissance).  Long story short, Black Plague....not cool!

LA7 - Looked at Crook's Brook and talked about THEME.

LA9 - Finished AR testing and got books.  Will continue with short story tomorrow.

 

August 30 & 31, 2011 - start of the school year...SO BUSY!!!

First home room and then an assembly.  The Englilsh 20 class go so little attention, but we'll pick it up on thursday (wednesday they, along with the 12s, were in the session all day).

Great to see the new grade 9s.  Passed out the class syllabus and went over a description of the year (aiming towards those PATs).  Read the story The Visitors and homework is questions 3 and 4 (foreshadowing and atmosphere)

New faces in grade 7 - for both LA and Social.  In social, I passed out the syllabus and we started deciding on a definition of WORLDVIEW.  In Language Arts, we figured out our new passwords and took the Star Reading test - we'll pick out AR books tomorrow. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

November 23, 2010 - round up of past two weeks.  Parent/Teacher Interviews tonight!!!

English 20 - After finishing the film unit and orginal plays, we've jumped right into the novel study, Nightby Elie Wiesel.  The long answer questions (pick 5 of the 16) are due tomorrow at the start of class.  Currently workng on rough copies of essays.  Remember to get an outline and the bare bones done before we hit the lab to work on the good copy.  The revision stage is where the magic happens - expand on ideas, work on improving your vocabulary, proofread, proofread and then proofread some more.

English 30 - Completed the film Mementoand are now working on original non-linear fictional stories.  Outlining is important!  Out-of-sequence but must maintain the narrative flow!

LA9 - In the middle of the POETRY unit.  So far, we've completed Haikus, Limericks, Concrete and Acrostic poems in finished/final form to add to our Anthology.  Still to come...(dramatic pause).....EPIC POEMS!

LA7 - Continued to work on various stories from the textbook in demonstrating understanding through short answer. 

CTS 7/8 - Finishing up with the various PAINT projects - most current, DC vs. Marvel or Hanna Barbera vs. Warner Bros. mash-ups.

Drama - Finished building puppets and stage, putting polish on plays, and getting ready to present to the younger kids.

Eng30 - Student reports given out and missed assignments handed in.  Of Mice and Men Essay due tomorrow!

Eng20 - Started our original plays...you pick the subject, you write the dialoge, you start acting, you entertain! 

LA7 - Read two poems about changing perspective, then like a beatnik french coffeehouse (circa 1968) we discussed the poems...and then started writing out own.  These are for homework - be prepared to walk into class and launch right into your poem.

Drama - finished puppets, now finishing plays...soon to be performed before a live studio audience.

LA7 - Vocabulary and Communication day - fun with irregular verbs.  And I'm not using the word "fun" literally.

LA9 - Handed back essays for revision (as well as a "catch-up" class).

Eng20 - completed film Rushmoreand now working on rough copies of essay.  We'll be in the lab tomorrow so you can finish them then.

LA9 - gave back opinion essays with comments.  We had to redo them!! 

LA7 - finishing up our fiction works.  Very creative from what I've seen so far.

Drama - Buttons and feathers and glue...oh my!  Such a variety of puppets - and each special in there own way...really...I'm serious.  We'll start practicing the actual plays starting next class.

Eng30 - Completing rough copies of our Of Mice and Menessays.  Gave out Student Reports.

Eng20 - Went over Film Essay Topics and started the film Rushmore.

CTS 7/8 - Enjoyed some Rocky Horror Picture Show music, Glee-style.  AR Reading, typing skills and created scenes from a movie using SketchUp.

LA9 - Going from rough to good on our opinion essays.  Went over format of essay.  Will finish in the lab tomorrow.

Eng20 - Looked at play about a post-apocolyptic world where pollution and waste has caused the human race to dress in rags and talk in slang (Oh Mad Max, you've ruined any positive post-apocolyptic worlds for us!).  Looked at filmmaker Wes Anderson. Gave out Student Reports.

Drama - again with the puppets.  Almost ready to start plays.....get ready elementary kids!

Drama - started making puppets.....creepy, creepy puppets.

LA7 - Vocabulary work and then completed new AR test for next 6 week cycle.  Still need to see librarian to get new 6WGoal...we'll do that on monday.  KEEP READING!

LA9 - AR reading test as well.  Fact Based Information piece handed in (if not, it is homework), and gave out subjects for opinion piece.

CTS 7/8 - After our usual round of super fun keyboarding games, we wrote up MSWord reports with an emphasis on formatting.

Eng30 - Worked on Of Mice and Men essays and then did new AR tests - this is the start fo the next 6 week cycle!

Eng20 - Continued working on the Violence in Today's Society essays.  Also re-did the AR Test so that we could start a new 6 week cycle.

LA7 & LA9 - AR Reading periods.  We got all up in our books, y'all!  Good stuff.....good stuff....

Eng 20 - Staring good copies of your Violence in Today's Societynon-fiction, research papers.  We're in the lab tomorrow to continue.

LA9 - Finishing up our good copies of our non-fiction, FACT writing.

LA7 - Fiction stories....and the wilder the better!  Remember to outline first (setting, characters, short plot summary).  Student Reports were given out today for this class.

Drama - started writing out puppet plays.  We'll be making out puppets on friday.  Remember the difference between having an old sock on your hand and a puppet is a little something I like to call MAGIC!

Eng 30 - Started our Of Mice and Menessays and watched a bit more of the excellent film version.  We're in the lab thursday so we'll have that class to complete good copies.  They'll be due at the start of Wednesday's class next week (we'll finish the movie on monday).

Eng 20 - More talk of IRONY.  Get your ideas ready for your Non-Fiction Unit Final.  We write our rough copies tomorrow and then onto good copies thursday when in the lab.

CTS 7/8 - First major timed typing test today (  <-----that's called alliteration!).  Also researched candy...mmmm....

LA9 - In the lab working on non-fiction writing assignment - you choose the topic, but don't make it too broad or narrow.

Oct 18, 2010 - REMEMBER: Grad meeting tonight at 6:30.  Parents AND graduating students.

Eng 20 - Two sides to every arguement...in this case, the value of Kraft Dinner.  Pick one side from the piece and create a box that reflects that author's view.

Drama - Presented the final, polished versions of the radio plays....english accents optional....thunder so real you'd think you wee in the middle of a storm!

LA9 - Oh, Edgar Allan Poe, always so creepy!  When adapting a story, you must decide what to keep to maintain the integrity of the story, and what might be cut.  Took Tell Tail Heart and illustrated the entire story.

LA7 - Major writing assignment in which we explored what makes good fiction.

Eng20 - NonFiction essays can take many forms...so let's look at the one that INforms...heh heh heh.  Seriously though, we'll have monday's class to finish our essays in which you have to educate me on the subject of your choice.  It's a delicate balancing act between what to include and what to edit out. 

Drama - What super power would you have if you could pick one?  The ablity to leave a trail of Salt&Pepper wherever you walk?  Or would having EVERY super power just cancel each other out?  Is "being lazy" a super power?  Just about ready to do our radio plays.

LA7 - Vocabulary work and then onto Subject & Predicate (complex & simple).

LA9 - digging deeper into what a writer is saying.  Look beyond the obvious to explain what the message might be. Ya, we did that today!

CTS 7/8 - Where would you travel if money and time was not a hassle?  Well, research and tell me about it (in PowerPoint form, of course).

Eng30 - Completing work on essays that are due.  Some still owe me both the autobiographies AND the Dr. Strangeloveessays.  Better get them handed in.  The Diploma 1 Question 1 is due tuesday!

Eng20 - Voices of our Grandmother's assignment due at the end of class.

LA 7&9 - AR reading day....enjoy a good book - there's nothing better!

September 27 - October 1

It was a very busy week with lots of different "out of class" activities including Cross Country on wednesday, the Terry Fox Run on thursday and the Farm Safety expo (for grade 7s and 8s) on friday.  It's great to be in a school that has so many activities that get us out of our desks and into the world!

Eng30 - we took a look at Question 1 on Diploma Exam 1.  This is the written response part and the first question is the more creative of the two questions that make up Part 1.  We examined an old question and broke it down to its parts - especially in regards to the marking sheet as used by Alberta Ed - and wrote up our own answers.

Eng20 - Finished up with our own fictional stories, then examined (in essay form, of course) what makes good fiction (you can even pick a specific genre of fiction to go indepth on). 

LA9 - Discussing consequences (when life offers you options, what are the results of taking one path over another?) and we'll be writing short fiction pieces in which consequences play a major part.

LA7 - Taking a look at non-fiction.  Read an interesting article of Canadian Astronauts which lead to a research project.  We went over what it means to research on the internet (editting skills...what to add, what to remove).

CTS7/8 - created future autobiographies, in which the students wrote about the bands they would form, and the spy schools they'd be recruited into.

Eng30 - got all up in some serious revisions!  Going from rough to good copies (no, I meant GREAT copies).  Keep your eye on the big blue page and remember your Matters of Choice/Correctness.

Eng20 - Creative writing time - same thing...from rough to good is when the magic happens....the magic off great writing!

LA7&9 - AR classes.  Find a book, read it.  Simple.

Eng20 - Discussed mood with regards to The Fog Horn, then went over symbolism with regards to pop culture.

LA9 - Completed our own myths and legends (it should have been handed in!).

LA7 - Covered arparthied and South Africa for our research projects.  Completed comic strips from yesterday.

Drama - Made lots of cool noise with a crazy game of cups to warm up, then watched a video that featured DOGS* (how cool is that!?! Thanks OK GO!).  Continued on final radio play scripts.

Eng30 - Autobiographical stories.  Instead of  a list of your life, pick two specific stories that defined who you are.  Make them interesting!  I want my monocle to pop out in shock and awe at how great these stories are.

Eng20 - Read Third Bank on the River and discussed symbolism.  Who knew a simple boat could mean so many deep things?  Jumped into sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury's The Fog Horn.  Creepy?  You bet...that's what atmosphere is all about.  How does the writer create this mood?  You tell me....tomorrow (yup, homework)

CTS 7/8 - got to know some classic album covers as we recreated them in PAINT.  Darkside of the Moon, some Van Halen(NOT Hagar!). 

LA9 - Completing our own Mythological stories, ie. legends.

Eng20 - Short fiction...time to do some writing of your own!  Make it interesting!!

Drama - After the great short, practice radio plays, we've formed two groups to complete scripts and plays (including sound effects). 

LA9 - finished rough copies of our own myths/legends. Will complete good copy in the lab tomorrow and illustration to go with story.

LA7 - Comic strip and words of advice.  Went over question 1a-e and will complete our own comic strip with advice from story as focus.

Eng20 - Went over Wedding Gift assignment and then completed The Dead Child(p50, q 1,2,3).  Discussed how a writer uses words to create moods with setting, and making inferences (vs. directly stated).

LA9 - added new ending to short story Doing Something.  Continued the author's voice and true to established characters.

LA7 - Read Somedays You're the Puppy and assigned (if not done HOMEWORK) question 1)a-e to be discussed in class tomorrow.

Drama - groups presented their radio plays and some cackled like an evil witch.

CTS 7/8 - How to use internet search engines - treasure hunt of useless trivia.

LA9 - Read Doing Something and discussed metaphors and similesHomework is to find three examples of each and explain what the author is using these figurative language devices for in the story.

Eng20 - New seating plan in the lab which went over VERY well...ha ha.  Looked at Television Watching Artist and answered questions 1 and 3.  These involve exploring the THEME of the novel.  Only one block due to interfaith ceremony.

Drama - Played FREEZE and then completed scripts for radio programs.

LA7 - Vocabulary (a vowel) and communications (sentences -----> paragraphs ------> compositions).

LA9 - discussed editing, and good copy of autobiographies due tomorrow!

CTS 7/8 - Keyboarding skills and then an intro to PAINT.  Custom album covers with some pretty wild band names.

Eng30 - Discussed Satire and Irony, looked at Kubrick and Sellers.  Started the film Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Eng20 - Talked about editing and revising rough copies, then completed the alternate ending to A Matter of Balance.

Both LA7 & 9 - decided that Day 5 would be our one period out of seven to dedicate to AR.

Eng20 - Matter of Balanceread.  Continued with story and discussed ambiguity.  Remember to stay in author's voiceand keep characters true.  Will continue rough copy on tuesday in lab.  Homework: complete PingPong writing with PEER MARKING for start of tuesday's class.

 LA9 - discussed EDITING writing - continued working on our good copies of Autobiogaphies.

LA7 - Finally got to do AR Testing and then went over AR program.  Found books in library and enjoyed a reading class.

Drama - Warmup: Voice of other actors.  Continued working on scripts for radio plays.  Discussed format of script and importance of sound effects in creating the scene.

Eng20 - The Fine Art of Editing!  What to add, subtract, refine - expand on the rough copy.  Good copies of our Ping Pong piece.

Drama 10 - Went over AlbertaEd specs and decided what sections we want to do this year....arg, MIMES!  Played "SCREAM!!" as warm up and then started on group radio plays (remember those sound effects).

LA9 - Biography....tell me about yourself.  Rough copies should have been completed; if not, then for homework.  You must have completed rough before you come to class tomorrow so we can continue working on the next step.  Also, we'll do AR testing on thursday.

LA7 - Signed in on computers and set up LA7 folder.  Discussed what a Biography is and started working.  We'll do AR testing on friday.
